You can make the quick drive to Lake Pontchartrain, which borders Louisiana's Gulf Coast, encompasses 630 square miles on the state's southern border. The ocean is not much farther south, and large cities, such as New Orleans, sit on this lake's shore.
This lake is technically an estuary because it is open to the Gulf of Mexico and has a mix of salt and freshwater. It is the perfect place to observe marine life, birds and catch a variety of fish due to its shallow waters. You can even sight dolphins, sharks, and other unique ocean life at times.
The lake is open to swimming, fishing, boating, and other recreation. It is a great spot to experience big lake living while being able to return to the tranquility of Double Bayou Lagoon.
